Blue Sky is back (Now under Disney's name) with their newest animated film, it's been two years since their last film Ferdinand, which I quite enjoyed even if it wasn't great, but now they are owned by Disney, I wasn't too sure how this upcoming animated film based on a short film will make any difference since they do release some unnecessary sequels to Ice Age, but I think with this new animated film with it's all star cast, who knows. maybe Blue Sky has finally made something different and something new to offer? the short film the film is based on called "Pigeon Mission" is pretty decent as a student project, though I have seen better short films but it's pretty decent either way, well I saw the film yesterday, which is even stranger when it was released on Boxing Day. how random. anyways I saw it and. OH, MY, GOODNESS, Blue Sky has actually made a legit pretty good film and I don't mean as in eye candy or noise or just for the sake of money, no I mean a really funny, stylish, epic, creative, new and enjoyable animated feature, but it still has a few of Blue Sky's natural cliches, so let's talk about it.
Lance Sterling (Will Smith) is considered as the world's greatest spy, he's has stylish, charm, one liners and smooth moves, he can take out the bad guys just like that! however there is this even bigger villain named Killian (Ben Mandelsohn) who wants to kill every agent in the world using his M-9 droids, however with the tech geek Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) Lance will have to use a spy to avoid by a team of agents who are on the hunt for him, so. he is turned into a pigeon, he now has to get used being a pigeon until Walter makes a antidote to make Lance human again, yeeeah, this does sound quite dumb and generic, it's basically a Emperor's New Groove sort of film where our hero has to go through being a animal throughout the entire film, so you can guess how this film will end up, it has so many predicable and cliched moments that make the plot feel unoriginal, not only that but sometimes the humour can try too hard with it's toilet humour that isn't all that funny, however. with all that said, Troy Quine & Nick Bruno did put in a bit of effort with what they can do, they made the humour actually legit funny and clever, the film also makes fun of spy films in a silly but fun way, but it's also self-aware about what kind of film this is, it's also got so many action and creative scenes that there are too many to count from but they are very epic and interesting to watch, I was never bored or annoyed by it, the whole pigeon point of view for Lance is funny and amusing to see him suffer and somewhat enjoy his disguise form, making it silly but enjoyable to see, which is pretty refreshing and nice since most of Blue Sky's films are kind of all over the place and not all that funny, although it is dumb and makes no sense, the story does make up for it's unoriginal and pretty predictable plot, with it's clever parodies of other films, some self aware moments and with better heart, comedy and action, Spies in Disguise's story has a identity that can easily be recognised, but mainly thanks to it's directing and writing, the team at Blue Sky did the best they can with what they made and had fun with it.
The animation from Blue Sky is still super strong and awesome! like the plot, there is a certain style to this animation, it kind of has this Incredibles look to it by how obscure and cartoon the characters look, however that is a good thing because the characters are nicely designed and how this very cool look to them, especially Lance, Walter, Kimura, Killian and even the pigeons, it's also incredibly beautiful and the locations are very interesting, along with a lot of creative and super epic action scenes that know how to be cartoony yet stylish, when it comes to it's visual comedy, that can also get super funny and fun, lots of Walter's gadgets are pretty creative and awesome, while also being silly! also the opening title sequence is so much like a Bond film with it's choice of colour and transition, usually Blue Sky's films are quite beautiful, but with this one, this one succeeds that part but it also a fresh new style that makes this stand out from the rest of their films, it's colourful, epic, stylish, colourful, humorous and a lot of fun to watch! so I'm happy that Blue Sky's animation style has a fresh look that makes this film has a visual identity, making it one of the coolest spy films out there.
The characters are all memorable in how entertaining they are, unlike the last two Blue Sky films, they do balance the characters out decently, most of them getting the right amount of screen time, while others have fitting small roles, Lance Sterling is a pretty likeable and charming spy, he's super funny especially when he gets turned into a pigeon and trying to survive as one, I really enjoyed him and how he is portrayed, same can be said with Walter, he's pretty funny, helpful and at times can be relatable, the chemistry between the two is decent at best, it's pretty enjoyable but Sterling can be a bit unlikeable to Walter, the other characters are also fun and cool, like Killian, the big antagonist of the film who has a robo-hand, he's threatening, menacing and even has a cool design when he find out what his actual form is, i super enjoyed him, I'm glad he's not some dumb an stupid villain, he is very intelligent and villainous, Kimura (Masi Oka) is a funny and cool villain but he's not in the film for that long, Marcy (Rashida Jones) is cool and hilarious as the agent who is on the hunt for Sterling along with her two assistants Eyes (Karen Gillan) and Ears (DJ Khaled) they are not really villains as they do work for the same team as Lance, but later on. yeah you can guess the rest, the pigeons that accompany Pigeon Lance and Walter are funny silent comic reliefs who are also helpful! Lovey has a crush on Lance who hasn't got a thing for pigeons which is hilarious, Jeff is a cute big pigeon and Crazy Eyes is just bizarre and hilarious in how he will eat anything! although I'll admit sometimes a few of these characters can be a bit unless like Joy Jenkins (Reba McEntire) and Wendy Beckett (Rachel Brosnahan) who only serve as plot elements, who do may somewhat of a big comeback and a reason for our two heroes to do this journey, the voice acting is what saves these characters from being weak and forgettable, I mean I liked all of these characters, but the voice acting is really what saves these characters from being generic, Will Smith is excellent as Lance Sterling, he has that signature charming, charisma and comedy that makes him enjoyable as this spy, Tom Holland just likes Peter Parker when he is the voice of Walter, maybe if he just did his actual accident then his American accent, that would of gave his character a new identity, Ben Mendelsohn as Killian is creepy, threatening, quiet and evil, Mendelsohn sounds like he's having a blast as yet another villain, Rashida Jones always does good comedy and charm whatever character she voices like with Marcy here, Masi Oka is pretty good as Kimura who has a nice threatening voice that fits his character quite well, as for Karen Gillan and DJ Khaled as Eyes and Ears, they also good but they sound like too much like their actual voices, sometimes it can get distracting when you recognise their voices a little too often, but either way, they are still pretty good, the characters know how to be funny, memorable and charming, they can be threatening or they can sometimes mock some other well known spy characters like with Lance, Kimura and Killian, but along with some pretty solid voice acting, the characters are fun, cool and enjoyable then they have any right to be.
Theodore Sharpio's score is fantastic, it does have a very James Bond feel to it in terms of how it sounds, it is a excellent score, as for songs made for the film like "Then There Were Two. Freak of Nature" are pretty awesome and fitting songs for the movie made and sung by Mark Ronson.
Well. that was a nice surprise, a nice film to end off the 2010 decade and even the year but. this might be one of the better Blue Sky films in a long time, okay it's not quite as great as Ice Age or the Peanuts Movie, but it's better then most of the Blue Sky films out there, Spies in Disguise is a nice, refreshing, super funny and action packed film from Blue Sky, it has a engaging story with lots of comedy and action that blends well together, the animation is stylish, creative and colourful, the characters are charming and memorable, the voice acting is top notch and it has great music provided, yes it's cliched and sometimes the humour can be a little gross,if you need a film to see for the whole family, take them to see this, forget Cats and Rise of Skywalker, go see this great family film. I mean there is Jumanji: The Next Level, but this is better, well, I think Blue Sky might have a chance at making something better with their future now they are part of Disney, Spies in Disguise is a good start, so I hope for more awesome and great stuff from them! but all I ask is. Although this plot summary sounds as if could be ripped from recent U. S. headlines, “ Incitement ” is actually a provocative drama from Israeli helmer Yaron Zilberman (“A Late Quartet”) which looks at what inspired the devoutly Orthodox law student Yigal Amir to kill Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The assassination took place on Nov. 4, 1995, as Rabin was trying to orchestrate a comprehensive peace settlement between Israelis and Palestinians that involved giving up territory controled by Israel since the Six Day War, and his death effectively derailed the prospect of peace. While “ Incitement ” is a compelling watch, with archival footage neatly woven in, and offers a salutary warning about how easily democracies are endangered, this psychological profile of a political assassin nevertheless falls into a kind of moral trap. By putting the killer at the center of the film and focusing on his motivation, it inevitably elicits understanding, empathy and, conceivably, admiration for the wrong character. “Incitement” has been nominated for 10 Ophir awards in Israel (including best picture, which, if it wins, will make it Israels official Oscar submission) although it wont be released there until after the Sept. 17 elections, perhaps in view of how Netanyahu comes off in the archival footage. Without doubt, it will prove controversial with the local audience, not least for portraying Amir as attractive and charismatic and for re-airing his views, which are still shared by many in the country — even in the Knesset. The action kicks off in 1993, with a strikingly articulate Prime Minister Rabin at the Clinton White House in Washington, D. C., where he signs the documents known as “Oslo I” and shakes the hand of his longtime enemy, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat, much to the disgust of Bar-Ilan University student Amir (Yehuda Nahari Halevi, intense) who joins public rallies calling Rabin a traitor. Although born in Israel, Amir is part of a large, lower-middle-class Orthodox family of Yemeni immigrants and he bears a chip on his shoulder about his Oriental heritage. Indeed, he brags to his Ashkenazi girlfriend Nava (Daniella Kertesz) that he is like a laser pointer, marking his targets and achieving them, such as graduating from what he claims is the best Ashkenazi yeshiva. Although his gentle father (Amitay Yaish Ben Ousilio) is troubled by his sons grandiosity and support of the American-Israeli physician Baruch Goldstein who killed dozens of Muslim worshipers at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, his more extreme mother (Anat Ravnizky, making a strong impression) never tires of boosting his self-regard, telling him that his given name, Yigal, means that he will redeem the Jewish people and that he is destined for greatness. After performing his military service in a religious combat unit where he was viewed as one of the most fanatical members, Amir moves in a circle of ideologues and rabbis who are even more radical. He accepts and becomes obsessed with their theoretical arguments that justify the killing of Rabin under Jewish law. With his older brother Hagai (Yoav Levi) and army buddy Dror Adani (Dolev Ohana) Amir plots to move into the territories that IDF forces are leaving under the Oslo agreement, but cant find enough like-minded zealots to make it work. In the meantime, a rash of suicide bombings within Israel make it even more difficult for the peace process to gain traction. The filmmakers include archival footage that depicts the then-opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu condemning and misrepresenting Rabins plans, stirring up maximum anger among those determined never to give up an inch of land. After Hava dumps Amir, he finds another religious settler girlfriend, Margalit (Sivan Mast) the niece of the rightwing rabbi Benny Elon. Although he constantly boasts about his plans to take Rabin out, saying that the secular state cant judge him for obeying Gods law, she cant believe that he would actually violate the commandment “Thou Shalt Not Murder, ” and she doesnt report him. The screenplay, co-written by Zilberman and Ron Leshem, is the product of four years of research and stresses the protagonists psychopathy. They show Amir as a convincing liar when he needs to get out of trouble — and when he needs to remain in shooting range of the Prime Minister. He wants others to do things for him, but he doesnt have time for their problems. Nevertheless, given that he is onscreen the entire time, audiences cant help but care about him, which is a problem. Indeed, it might have helped the balance of the film to have even more footage of Rabin and his thoughtful, cogent rhetoric. On the one hand, “Cunningham” stages many of the pioneering choreographers abstract works superbly, capturing the vision of an idiosyncratic artist. On the other hand, when it comes to exploring the man behind the art, the films execution feels out of step with its ambition. Cunningham blended the footwork of classical ballet with less traditional movements of the torso to craft a style often labeled as avant-garde, though he shied away from the label. Cunningham launched his career in the late 1930s and was active until his death, at 90, in 2009. The documentary tracks the rise of Cunninghams New York-based dance company, focusing on dance pieces he created between 1942 and 1972. Peppered throughout the documentary, these sequences feature a fusion of virtuosic choreography, remarkable athleticism and polished filmmaking. (The films preferred format is 3-D, though the visuals are still impressive in the 2-D print that will be shown at Landmarks E Street Cinema. By setting the expressive dances in surprising locales — including a lush forest of towering trees, a cobblestone town square and a fluorescent-lit tunnel — Kovgan accentuates the seemingly limitless possibilities of Cunninghams aesthetic, with visual grandeur. Kovgan, a Russian filmmaker making her solo feature debut, also creates a sense of scale, using striking aerial footage of dancers performing on a seaside rooftop. Dancers perform a piece by choreographer Merce Cunningham on a seaside rooftop in the documentary “Cunningham. ” (Magnolia Pictures) So what do we learn about the mastermind behind such innovation? Using rehearsal and interview footage, the film presents Cunningham as a difficult genius, less interested in commercial success than pure artistic expression. To compensate for the smaller aspect ratio of the archival footage, Kovgan cleverly fills in the frame with photographs and letters from Cunninghams life, at times throwing multiple clips on screen simultaneously, and playing them side by side. These elements lend the film the appealing aesthetic of a scrapbook. But the tracking of Cunninghams career is disappointingly scattershot, barely scratching the surface of the man outside the dance studio. Complicated relationships with collaborators — including composer John Cage, Cunninghams longtime romantic partner — are mentioned, but not explored in a substantial way. The decision to limit the scope of the documentary to Cunninghams heyday means we learn little about the roots of his artistry, or the endurance of his legacy. Thats not to say that “Cunningham” even aspires to paint the definitive picture of its subject. What we get, however, isnt so much a cohesive narrative as it is set pieces, held together by a thin framing device. For a film of such visual audacity, the lack of storytelling depth is frustrating. In Kovgans defense, Cunningham may have been too enigmatic to probe with complexity. He had a reputation for being cold and distant, as the movie notes, and his reluctance to explain his art is well documented. “I dont describe it, ” he says at one point, “I do it. ” Like the man himself, “Cunningham” takes that mantra to heart — for better and for worse. Cunningham creek elementary. Nick Allen December 13, 2019 2019 has seen many great documentaries, across the various styles in which to tell a true story. But theres been nothing quite like Alla Kovgan s “Cunningham, ” an exhilarating testament to documentaries as a boundless form of art. A celebration of New York choreographer Merce Cunningham, the film dreams beyond restrictions many visual storytellers seemingly adhere to. As its narrative tells brief bits about Cunningham's life, and puts his other-worldly dance routines center stage while accompanied by flourishes from 20th century avant-garde music, “Cunningham” honors the tools of filmmaking—sound, action, dialogue—with the harmonious blending of three art forms: music, dance, poetry. Advertisement The first words heard from Cunningham are essential to understanding his art, but also to enjoying Kovgans film. “I never was interested in dancing that referred to a mood or or a feeling, or in a sense expressed the music. the dancing does not refer, it is what it is. Its that whole visual experience. ” That statement provides a path that most art doesn't: Dont interpret. Just watch. Its an inviting, liberating, intoxicating mindset, and perfect for a movie whose immense pleasure comes from beholding continually inspired creativity, simultaneously from an intentional debut director and an instinctual renowned choreographer. In lieu of a typical structure, Kovgan presents Cunningham's life as like a string of performances, in which we sometimes get to see footage of him doing one (sometimes with close-ups of his massive feet) as matched with a modern dancer (more specifically, a member of the last Cunningham group. The performances are shown chronologically, and span his work from 1942 to 1972 (Cunningham created until 2009, the year he died at age 90. While it is most concerned with the philosophy behind his dances, Kovgan's editing does create some narrative, with audio snippets of students talking about studying with Cunningham, and later forming a troupe that went on tour in 1964 for an international tour in Europe and Asia (where their audiences werent always pleased. A decent chunk of the story focus also concerns his relationship with avant-garde composer John Cage, and reflections from students about getting onto Cunningham's wavelength of instinctual movements that come with no explanation. You could accuse Kovgan's film of not having enough connective tissue between some of these story elements, but "Cunningham" never wants to be fulfilling as simply a biography to begin with. The film touches upon some of Cunningham's most famous collaborations, like with the cathartic cacophony of Cages music, the pop art of Robert Rauschenberg, or Andy Warhol s silver clouds, the metallic balloons shaped like pillows. There are plenty of collaborators that arent even mentioned (Brian Eno, Radiohead, Roy Lichtenstein) same goes with the accomplishments and awards Cunningham received. But an emphasis on history is not missed; his work speaks beautifully on its own. In Kovgans hands, even archive practice footage feels worthy of a museum. “Cunningham” actively considers the past and present—audio interviews of Cunningham talking about his approach plays over modern-day footage of dancers enacting the philosophies of his words. The routines are the film's true focus, as with one of the first we see: a large empty space with windows for natural light to paint the floor; dancers in pastel-colored leotards are observed by a steady camera that gently goes back and forth with them. The dancers have a precise flow, and the ease of their full-body expressions is just one eye-popping element. Aside from hearing Cunninghams words (about his interest in “extending movement possibilities” by mixing dance and modern ballet) moments of silence are filled in by a near-meditative sound of feet landing and swiping across the floor. Each aesthetic piece at play demands attention, and it makes for an addictive spectacle. Other routines that follow contain more sounds, more props, more movie. Cunninghams “RainForest” from 1968, and accompanied by the experimental squeaks by David Tudor, has three dancers in nude-colored, torn tights kicking around Warhols silver clouds, all along a reflective floor. In its preservation of his work, Cunningham" offers one impressive staging after the next, like a piece that has dancers in the woods, or a rooftop at night. Meanwhile, Kovgan's camera becomes its own force, sometimes looking down on the dancers, running side to side with them, or putting its focus on their surroundings. Astonishingly, this is Kovgans first feature project, and yet her way of presenting her surplus of footage, photos, and letters is far beyond many of her peers. Many filmmakers would cut from one clip to the next, but Kovgan dares to often put her footage side by side, slightly overlap them like photos dropped on a table, or move the clip itself across the screen. The information of "Cunningham" is always in motion, in defiance of docs that seem to start and stop with each talking head. A similar kinetic effect occurs when archive footage is shown as a smaller box with a larger, defining photo of Cunningham in the background—like watching a video with your computers desktop visible in the background, but the two boxes orchestrate a grandiose sense of character with a full, striking image (Kovgan's approach is more like the 21st century storytelling in an " Unfriended " movie than a typical doc. Kovgan proves exceptional at making an audience understand a subject through unconventional filmmaking, just like Cunningham was clearly gifted at filling a stage with ideas, without having to say what it all means. Il est souvent légitime de se méfier de la fiabilité de certains films historiques soviétiques, cependant nous avons ici lexception à la règle. Certains extraits de ce film ont même été repris pour des documentaires en France. Le film nous plonge à travers le regard dun jeune garçon (qui perd ses illusions au fur et à mesure) dans lhorreur de la guerre et la folie meurtrière qui sest déroulée durant la seconde guerre mondiale. Il nous permet de suivre un jeune garçon qui traverse la campagne marécageuse biélorusse au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Son errance résume lintrigue du film qui ne sappuie sur aucun suspense mais uniquement sur une observation brutale du génocide que ces campagnes connurent. Les scènes sont parfois très éprouvantes dans leur cruauté par les désillusions auxquelles se heurte le jeune homme. Les horreurs ne résident pas dans les images de la guerre mais dans la prise de conscience qui édifie lesprit du personnage principal. Voyage terrifiant au sein dune guerre dont Klimov ne montre quasiment pas les combats, IDI I SMOTRI est une démonstration poignante de labsurdité de la mort, qui nest plus un acte politique mais un acte de survie. Une logique qui se mord la queue et qui se berce du triste apitoiement sur lequel se déverse notre pitié. La suite de notre critique c'est par ici. It is electrically operated using four 1. 5-volt batteries for power, with electrically-detonated compression charges to pressurise the fuel, and electrically-fired pyro igniters at the muzzle: this means that the LPO-50 has three distinct 2-3 second "shots" rather than projecting a constant stream. After all three shots were fired the backpack would need to be refilled and fitted with new compression charges or swapped out, and the pyro cartridges at the muzzle replaced. This odd mode of operation was taken from Soviet WW2-era one-shot FOG flame mines, themselves a refined version of a weapon developed in Britain in 1940 called the Flame fougasse. As a result of only being able to fire three times, the LPO-50 is a rare case of a flamethrower with iron sights, with a hooded front and flip-up rear. Like the ROKS flamethrowers, the flame gun is designed to resemble a conventional gun (in the LPO's case a light machine gun, even mounting a totally pointless bipod) with the goal of making it harder for the enemy to identify flamethrower troops. Unlike the ROKS flame guns, there is no mechanical action: on the ROKS the flame gun had a working bolt-action which was used to cycle blank ignition cartridges. The Soviet preference for these was because pilot-light igniter flamethrowers have trouble igniting their fuel at extremely low temperatures, as Germany discovered during Operation Barbarossa. The fuel was either ordinary diesel or a special thickened mixture to improve range: maximum range is 20 meters (66 feet) with diesel and 70 meters (230 feet) with thickened diesel. LPO-50s were exported to many Warsaw Pact nations, and China produces a copy called the Type 74 which is easily distinguished by having two tanks instead of three. The Irish Republican Army also acquired several during the 1980s, which were believed to have been smuggled in from Libya. The LPO-50 was replaced in Soviet service by the RPO Rys napalm rocket launcher, ancestor of the RPO-A 'Shmel' starting in the mid-70s, with the LPO-50 being withdrawn from service by the 80s. A number of these weapons seem to have made their way into the hands of film armorers in Russia and Eastern Europe during the Cold War: they tend to be used as stand-ins for German weapons in WW2 movies. Little joe red sovine. Poor Todds gonna get killed again. Little joe 2019. Im sure that you have read that this is a more modern retelling of invasion of the body snatchers. Don't think of it that way though. If you compare the 2 then my rating for this would go down. This feels more like a pretentious indie movie rather than a horror. The whole thing being about a flower was interesting, but the characters are boring and uninteresting. Which is disappointing considering that is what is supposed to hold this movie together. There isn't really a satisfying climactic scene that the movie builds up to and there is a ton of build up. The music in the movie was really odd to say the least and sometimes annoying. What can I say, I feel as if I wasted a lot of time on this movie.
