Di venerdì 17 gennaio 2020 Prevista per aprile l'uscita italiana dell'ultimo film di Terrence Malick A quasi un anno di distanza dalla prima a Cannes, l'ultimo film di Terrence Malick approderà nelle nostre sale. La Vita Nascosta – Hidden Life uscirà infatti in Italia il 9 aprile, e ad occuparsi della distribuzione sarà Disney Italia, con l'anteprima italiana che si tiene però oggi quale apertura del Trieste Film Festival. Sembrano passati decenni da quando i film del regista texano facevano fatica a trovare una finestra, non dico una distribuzione, frutto di campagne ridicole e forse addirittura ideologiche che hanno contribuito a fare passare tutta la produzione successiva a The Tree of Life come minore, se non addirittura trascurabile. Non da questa parte. Dell'ultimo Malick, quello cosiddetto intimista, ne abbiamo parlato in più occasioni, e l'abbiamo fatto sì in maniera entusiasta, ma non per questo disattenta rispetto a un percorso che va anzitutto contestualizzato, poi ciascuno scelga legittimamente da che parte stare. Ad ogni modo, La Vita Nascosta – Hidden Life rappresenta una sorta di concessione rispetto a dei modelli più accessibili, un ritorno a questo punto forse opportuno ad una forma più classica. Come però abbiamo avuto modo di sottolineare da Cannes, questo suo ultimo lavoro non fa che confermare la caratura del cineasta, la cui prosa non viene intaccata dalla rigidità di certe formule, che il nostro non aveva rifiutato... semplicemente, per ciò che voleva dire, si era rivolto ad altro. Si sente la mancanza di quella stagione lì, durata quasi dieci anni e quattro film (quanto quelli girati in un'intera carriera fino al 2011)? Non direi, e La Vita Nascosta – Hidden Life ne è una prova: il cambio di rotta infatti non comporta alcun tradimento. Malick è lì, e resta tale pur confrontandosi con una sceneggiatura ed una trama ben più delineate. Nel frattempo si sono concluse le riprese di The Last Planet, il suo prossimo film incentrato sulla figura di Gesù Cristo, girato in parte anche ad Anzio e Gravina in Puglia; sperando di beccarlo già a Cannes, cosa possibile dato che in questo nuovo corso i tempi sembrano essersi accorciati. Per concludere, di seguito trovate invece un estratto della nostra recensione di La Vita Nascosta – Hidden Life. D’altronde la vita nascosta è la stessa che proprio il cineasta di Waco conduce da decenni a questa parte, anni in cui, malgrado la ricerca, estenuante o meno, non è ancora approdato a delle risposte anche solo soddisfacenti. La grazia però con cui porta avanti questi discorsi, i modi attraverso cui ci conduce lungo l’ennesimo cammino che dall’oscurità porta verso la luce, restano insuperati, forse insuperabili. Non smette di meravigliare la capacità di Malick nel ricordarci quanto questo mondo, ingiusto per com’è, sia fondamentalmente ancorché inspiegabilmente buono se si ha lo sguardo per accorgersene. Ed una delle vie privilegiate al fine di acquisire tale sguardo non sta nel combattere bensì nel resistere. What ensues is entirely predictable.
The movie is nearly 3 hours long and the most interesting parts of the film are front-loaded in the first hour. The pacing of the film is already slow, then gets slower.
Although the film has some historical interest, it is simply not fun to watch because the story drags and the protagonist is entirely passive during the entirety of the film.
The audience is left to guess his motivations because he hardly says anything. It is hinted that the protagonist might feel his passive resistance is part of a quasi-religious duty to fight evil.
Multiple groups left the theater during my screening. The same story could have been told in half the time.
If there is one key message I took away from the film, it is one man's passive resistance is another man's passive aggression.
